Recommended litter type
Archived AS11 manuals consistently recommend clumping bentonite or mineral litter. They warn against tofu and crystal litter for the rolling/sifting mechanism.
Why clump quality matters
The machine must move waste through a separator. Weak clumps can break apart and contaminate clean litter; sticky clumps can smear on the drum; large pellets may not pass through the screen. A fast, firm clump is more important than a marketing term such as “premium.”
Practical selection checklist
- Use a mineral or bentonite clumping formula.
- Avoid oversized pellets and non-clumping absorbent litter.
- Do not overfill beyond the machine's line.
- Allow enough delay for urine clumps to firm before a cycle.
- Change only one variable at a time when troubleshooting.
Signs the litter is a poor match
- Wet smears on the roller or liner
- Clumps breaking into small pieces
- Clean litter being discarded excessively
- Grinding or increased motor strain
- Repeated incomplete separation
